Eid and Zakat ul-Fitr

`Eid

- Playing, recreation, and eating on the day of Eid:

These are permissible as log as they stay within the acceptable bounds of Islam. Anas said: When the Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, came to Madinah, they had two days for amusement. The Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, has exchanged these days for two better days:the day of breaking the fast and the day of sacrifice. (Related by An-Nasa'e and Ibn Hibban)

- Taking women and children to the prayer area:

The Prophet sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, used to take his wives and daugthers ot the two Eids. Umm Atiyah said: "We were ordered to go out with the single and menstruating women to the two Eids in order to wtiness the good and the supplications of the Muslims. The menstruating women though would stay away from the prayer area." (Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

- Going to the prayer area:

The Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, used to go to the prayer area by walking. Jaber narrated: "On the days of Eid, the Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, would go to the prayer area by one route and come back by another route." (Related by al-Bukhari)

- Eating before going to the prayer area:

Since Eid al-Fitr is the day on which Muslims break their Ramadhan fast, it is preferable to eat before going to the Eid prayer. It is a Sunnah of the Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, to eat an odd number of dates before going to pray Salat al-Eid. Anas reported: "The Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, would not go out on the day of Eid al-Fitr without eating an odd number of dates."(Related by al-Bukhari.)

- Preparation for Eid prayer:

It is preferred to make Ghusl (take a bath), wear one's best clothes and, for men, to put perfume before going to Salat al-Eid. Ibn Al-Qayyim said: "The Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, used to wear his best clothes for the Eid prayers and eh had clothes that he reserved for the two Eids and Jumu'ah."

- Making Takbeer:

Takbeer starts from the nght of Eid's eve until the Imam comes ot to start the prayer. Allah says (S2 A185): "You should complete the prescribed period and then you should glorify Allah (i.e., say Takbeer) for having guided you so that yo may be grateful to Him." The form of takbeer is related by `Umar and Ibn Mas`ud: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La illaha illallah. Allahu Akbar. Allahu Akbar wa lillahil-hamd."

- Congratulating each other:

It has been narrated that when the Prophet's companions met each other on the Eid day, they would say to each other: "May Allah accept from us and from you." (Related by Ahmad.)

Zakat Al Fitr

Zakat al Fitr is an obligatory charity on every Muslim at the end of the month of Ramadan. Ibn `Umar said: "The Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, enjoined the payment of one Sa'a of dates or one Sa'a of barley as Zakat al-Fitr on every Muslim, young and old, male and female, free and slave." (Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The purpose of Zakat al-Fitr is to purify the one who has fasted from any type of indecent act or speech he might have committed while fasting. It also helps the poor and the needy. Ibn Abbas said: "The Messanger of Allah, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, enjoined Zakat al-Fitr on the one who fasts to shield him from any indecent act or speech and for the purpose of providing food for the needy." (Related by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah.)

The Amount of Zakat al-Fitr

As the first hadeeth indicated, the amout of Zakat al-Fitr is one Sa'a. Sa'a is a volume measure correspoding approximately to the volume of 5 lb of good wheat. The material of the Zakat can be either dates, barley, wheat, rice, corn or similar items considered as basic foods. Abu Saeed said: "We used to give for Zakat al-Fitr on behalf of every child, aged person, free man or slave during the lifetime of the Messanger of Allah, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, one Sa'a of food, or one Sa'a of dried yogurt, or one Sa'a of barley, or one Sa'a of dates, or one Sa'a of raisins." (Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.)

The Time for Zakat al-Fitr

Zakat al-Fitr has to be paid by the end of Ramadhan. There are two times to pay Zakat al-Fitr. Either one or two days before Eid as 'Umar used to do, or the day of Eid before the Eid prayer. Ibn `Umar reported that the Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, ordered them to pay Zakat al-Fitr before they go out to perform the Eid prayer. If Zakat al-Fitr is paid after the Eid prayer, it will only be considered as regular charity. The Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, said: "If one pays Zakat al-Fitr before the Salat, it is considered an accepted Zakat, if he pays it after the Salat, it is considered an ordinary charity." (Related by Abu Dawud.)

Zakat al-Fitr is to be given to the same eight categories or people as in the other types of Zakat. Some scholars say that the poor and the nedy are the most deserving ones since the Prophet, sallaallahu `alayhe wa sallam, said that it had "...the purpose of providing food for the needy."

Reality and Obligation in Ramadan

During this Ramadhan do not let the sweetness of our deeds vansh into the night, leaving only emptiness. When one contemplates the texts on fasting, its wisdom and goals in Shariah, and looks at the reality of the Muslim communities, one realizes a wide gap between the reality and our obligations. Remember that Ramadhan is a bounty that Allah blessed His servants with, to strengthen their faith, and increase their piety (Taqwa). Allah said: "O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become pious." (Al-Baqarah 2:183). This article is an attempt to present the essential causes of this gap, and to some remedies. primary reason for the gap is ignorance about the goals of fasting and the wisdom behind it. Many Muslims ignore the purpose and wisdom of fasting. Fasting is done merely to conform to the social environmet without contemplation. If one is not aware of the divine wisdom of Shariah and its fruits in this world and in the hereafter, one will not apply it in the right way.

Goals of Fasting

Achieving Taqwa: is one of the most important wisdom of fasting. Fasting brings on Taqwa as it lessens the desire of the stomach and mutes the sexual appetite. Whoever fasts frequently would overcome these two desires more easily. This deter against committing abominations and sins and assist in controlling life leading to Taqwa.

Strengthening willpower and acquiring patience: The Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam called Ramadhan the month of patience as it increases one`s will power to control his desire and the selfishness of his soul. This training allows him to be strong in following Allah`s commands. The most important being to carry the Message and propel it forward. The person trains himself to be patient in obeying Allah by stopping at the limits set by Allah both by way of action and abstention. Allah said: "These are the limits set by Allah, so approach them not." (Al-Baqarah 2:187)

Fasting is pure worship: The fact that he is abstaining from food and drink both in public and in secret shows his honest faith and strong love of Allah, and his knowledge and feeling that Allah is all-knowing of everything. For this reason Allah has made the reward for fasting greater than for any other type of worship. Allah said in the hadith Qudsi: "Every deed of the son of Adam will be multiplied [in rewards], the good deed by ten of its like, up to seven hundreds, up to whatever Allah wills, except fasting, it is for Me and I will reward it. He abandons his desire and his food for My sake.." (Related by Muslim) lbn al-Qayyim said: "...And people may see that a person is not eating in front of them, but the fact that he is really abandoning his food and his desire for the sake of God is a thing that nobody can find out about, and that is the essence of fasting." (Zaad al-Ma`ad 2/29).

Relieving Muslims from life`s distractions: Eating, drinking, and socializing all distract a person and weaken ties with Allah. It is by the Mercy of Allah that Muslims are ordered to fast so as not to be bothered by the intrusion of these activities. Nor by the thought about them nor the anticipation for them when devoting themselves to the all types of worship Either reading the Qur`an, offering additional prayer or making I`tikaf. For this reason the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said: "Fasting is a shield, and a secure fortress against Hell fire" (Related by Ahmad).

Discovering Allah`s Blessings: A person experiences the hardship of the poor. He should then be thankful to Allah Who has blessed him with His bounty while others are deprived. This should make him more sympathetic and willing to share this bounty. The poor rediscovers that fasting helps a person be more devoted to worship. More able to concentrate and meditate. He should then be able of this devotion all year long, a blessing he should thank Allah for.

Acquiring strength and endurance:It has been discovered that depriving the body of food for a period of time helps its defense and endurance mechanism. This in turn this protects the body from certain diseases.

Remember that fasting is not only dependent on abstentions: Many believe that fasting consist only of certain abstentions, forgetting that Allah established certain acts of worship with fasting. Among which are:

Qiyamul-layl: The Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said: "Whoever performed the night prayer during Ramadhan out of belief and anticipating God`s rewards, will be forgiven his previous sins."(Related by Muslim).Performing Umrah: The Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said: "An Umrah during Ramadhan is like a Hajj with me." (Related by al-Hakim).

Offering Iftar (meal) to those who fasted. The Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said: "Whoever feeds a fasting pers

Ramadan in Madina

The approach to Makka lies through mountains,
sharp, unforgiving angles of granite. The road to
Madina passes through great plains of basalt: the
harra wastelands which provide dramatic reminders of
the region's volcanic past. Several eruptions are
recorded by the Muslim historians, the most fearsome
taking place in 1257, when a volcano poured out
fast-moving orange streams of lava, which were only
deflected to pass to the east of the city by the
fervent prayers of its inhabitants.

Desiccated by the merciless desert air, these
seas of fire have dried to form black basalt plains,
which stretch beyond the horizon. They are God?Ô
defence of the city, whose glassy sharpness kept at
bay the idolatrous invaders of Quraish, forcing them
to confront the believers at their only point of
access, at the Battle of the Trench. The desolation of
this landscape of flat blackness, interrupted by dry
sarha bushes, and, far away, the shapely profile of
extinct volcanoes, gives the impact of arrival an
extraordinary dramatic power.

The proximity of the City, on the motorway
inevitably dubbed the Hijra Highway, is first
announced by the slip-road to Abyar Ali, the Wells of
Ali. These are sweetwater sources much frequented by
pilgrims, eager to benefit from the medicinal
properties of these deep, cold wells once owned by the
Blessed Prophet's son-in-law. Pilgrims from the
Subcontinent, in particular, flock here to catch the
precious fluid in bottles, to be given to relatives on
their return: a gift almost as welcome as the Water of
Zamzam itself.

Ten minutes drive, and Quba is reached. Here,
the black barrenness of the harrat suddenly gives way
to a verdant sea of green. Alfalfa, watermelons,
cucumber and tomatoes grow here, between fruit trees
and the ancient symbol of Madina, the date palm
itself. In this prosperous suburb, now a place of
coffee-shops and small parks, can still be found the
Zarqa wells from which the Blessed Prophet drank when
first he reached the City, and which are the secret of
the land's fertility. Here, too, the Madinan Muslims,
and the penniless but radiant refugees from Makkan
tyranny, patiently lined the walls and the high
places, hoping for a glimpse of God's Messenger and
the faithful Abu Bakr, as they appeared as dots on the
shimmering horizon.

The mosque at Quba, the first place of worship
founded in Islam, is impressive but sober. The 1986
reconstruction retains the familiar features of
Madinese architecture, which are ribbed white domes,
and basalt facing over a modest exterior that recalls
Madina's primordial simplicity. The courtyard,
screened overhead by day from the scorching heat, is
flagged with black, red and white marble. Calligraphy
by great Turkish masters soars overhead, proclaiming
the uniqueness of this place. Arabesque latticework
filters the light of the palm groves outside. Doves
coo in the window-niches.

Despite the sense of peace, few linger here. The
pull of the Haram, the Sanctuary, is everywhere, and
as the sun lowers in the west the pilgrims have
thoughts only for the Prophet's Mosque. At this time,
there is only one destination for visitors and
city-dwellers alike. In Ramadan, in this city, it
would be possible to switch off the traffic lights in
the late afternoon. Every road becomes a one-way
street, pulling the visitor towards the cool, radiant
heart of the city.

Visitors who have not set foot in Madina before
are often in tears by now. The blessings of a still,
loving Presence can be breathed everywhere, softening
hearts, and loosening tongues in dhikr. Shops and
buildings pass by, but here the city itself is no more
than a blur. Visitors come here for one place, and for
one person alone.

The road skirts the Manakha district, and passes
the Mosque of Abu Bakr, its Ottoman minaret pointing
to the clear, reddening sky. Then, the splendour of
the Haram is suddenly revealed. A minaret, and then
several more, sparkle in welcome. And then the adhan
rises, piercing the warm air with its magnetic
summons.

A sea of quiet humanity pours into each of
seventy gates. Many have removed their sandals long
beforehand, out of respect for the ground, which holds
the Messenger in its embrace. Within, there is clear
light, carpets, water-barrels, and an extraordinary
dynamic which draws the visitor on, and in, until at
last the courtyard is reached, and the pilgrim stands
in the presence of the Best of Creation.

Hundreds of thousands are being fed. These
guests of the Prophet sit, while those honoured with
this service circulate, smilingly handing out dates,
or small containers of yoghurt. In this palace of the
Prophet, no-one, however poor, goes hungry when the
time of the fast is ended. Children tumble on the
carpets, laughing with delight at the experience of
the endless sanctuary. There is a murmur of grateful
conversation, and of prayer.

The space is articulated with supreme genius. To
one side is the Gate of Gabriel, leading on, and in,
to the Rawda, and to the mihrab in which the Messenger
himself laid his forehead on the earth in adoration of
God. On one side is the dakka, the carved marble
platform on which the muezzin and his assistants await
the appointed time. On the other rises the gold grille
beyond which lies the cool and shaded silence beneath
the great dome. The air here is perfumed by the rarest
of incense and musk, announcing the presence, beneath
the flagstones, of the Best of Creation, and Abu Bakr
and Umar, his closest companions.

The modern Egyptian poet al-Fayturi expresses
the emotions of millions:

Over the Prophet's form every speck of dust

is a pillar of light

ascending from the dome of his tomb

to the dome of the skies.

And the awe that makes our foreheads bow

draws its own horizon, and higher horizons,

from hands and from lips -

the road of "In the name of God."

The proximity is overwhelming for some pilgrims,
whose humility and awe forces them to sit at a
respectful
distance, perhaps some way down the mosque.
Others cannot sit too close. Everywhere, there is
worship, bowing and prostration, the mellifluous
murmuring of the Qur?Ân, and wordless contemplation.

A hadith tells us that Á?rayer in my mosque is a
thousand times better than prayer in any other mosque,
saving only the Sacred Mosque itself.????s the iqama
sounds, and half a million men and women rise with
longing for the prayer, the calculation does not feel
like an overstatement.

Prayer in the Rawda is especially sought after.
A hadith affirms that "the space between my grave and
my pulpit is one of the Meadows of Paradise." Here,
listening to the awesome gravity of God's word, the
continuity with the blessed past is felt intensely.
The greatest saints and scholars of Islam have stood
here: after the Companions came countless thousands:
the Four Imams worshipped here, as did al-Shaybani,
IbnJurayj, al-Zuhri, Sibawayh, Ibn Qutaybah,
al-Ghazali, al-Nawawi, A??sha al-BaÁÖniyya, Ibn
Khaldun: all the great souls of Islam have prayed
here, humbled by the Prophetic presence.

After the silent prayers of the day, the
worshippers drink the words of the Qur?Ân thirstily.
The greetings of peace are given, and the lines break
up as they worship individually. Circles of
remembrance form in the Rawda, as turbanned Turks
repeat a litany, guided by their teacher, prayer-beads
in hand. Nigerians, Uzbeks, Bangladeshis and a whole
sea of Indonesians do likewise.

A Baluchi folk-melody, 'May I see the towers of
Madina' sings,

On the tongues of this Rawda's nightingales
are words of wisdom,

More beautifully coloured than all the
flowers of Madina!

Among the many Prophetic litanies which the
careful ear may hear in this place, the most
widely-used is the Dala'il al-Khayrat, the Indications
of Blessings, by Imam al-Jazuli, whose tomb in far-off
Marrakesh breathes something of the spirit of Madina.
This great prayer begins with over two hundred Names
of the Prophet, culled from the scriptures, and which
may also be read in exquisite Naskh calligraphy above
the green tiles on the qibla wall. Hundreds of names
recall him: the Messenger of Mercy, the Emissary of
Virtue, Reliant, the Beloved of God, Seal of the
Prophets ...

These pilgrims know that they are in the
presence of the most influential man in history. He
had found a people divided by the crudest pagan
ignorance, and left them united in the purest and most
exalted monotheism.
Formerly they had denied life after death;
twenty-three short years on, they lived with it
constantly before their eyes. He had found them unable
to rule themselves, torn by age-long vendettas,
knowing no law other than the selfish interest of the
tribe and the individual's honour; and he left their
hearts so united that they withstood the shock of his
death, and went out to liberate the world.

In this place, the Messenger guided his
disciples. Here they learnt how to be still before
their Lord, how to restrain their anger, to live for
others, to show compassion to young and old. This was
the crucible of a New World Order: the most effective
school ever known.

And presiding over it all, still, is the
presence of the Prophet. His mission for the Muslim
commonwealth awaits its final consummation, when, at
the Resurrection, he shall appear with his name of
Intercessor. There is no Muslim alive who does not
hope for the honour of resurrection under his green
Banner of Praise, and for the rapture of salvation
through his pleading before his Lord. Adab, good
manners in his presence, is hence passionately
cultivated and prayed for. Those who respectfully move
forwards, to stand before the gold of the Wajiha to
greet him, are moved not only by love and gratitude
for what he did, but by fervent hope for his prayers,
help and pleading amid the terrors of the Apocalypse.

He said: "No Muslim greets me but that Allah
restores my spirit to me so that I am able to respond
to him." Five times a day, worshippers end their
prayers by invoking blessings and peace upon his
spirit. No human being, since the beginning of time,
has been more blessed. And this reciprocal rite of
taslim is the culmination of a lifetime of calling
down God's blessings upon him, a cosmic process in
which God and the Angels themselves join. In the
presence of his spirit, salat and salam come
continuously. The entire mosque is filled with prayers
for him; and this is the largest building in the
world. Here, the existence of humanity finds its
justification.

"Not one of you believes," says a hadith, "until
I am dearer to him than his father, his son, and all
mankind." The power of this love detains many in the
mosque. But the body has its rights, and others slowly
leave, to find a place to eat in this crowded city.
Restaurants of all kinds abound, and the air around
the mosque loses its hint of musk and sandalwood, to
become fragrant with the aroma of Turkish kebabs,
Lebanese meze, Malaysian satay, Sudanese chicken and
beans. In the darkness, street vendors offer the
garments of fifty countries:Indonesian batik, Damascus
muslin, Egyptian cotton, Moroccan chiffre. Prayer
beads of olive pits, amber or ebony dangle from
shelves. Women browse through jewellery, heaped high
with no fear of thieves.

The cheerful fellowship of the eating-houses is
not the profane self-exaltation of the smart Western
restaurant. Here, companionship is the main item on
the menu. Struggling for words, Muslims of two hundred
nationalities speak about their homes, about the
troubles of the world, about their hopes for an end to
the unbearable shallowness of the modern world, and a
return to God.

The air outside is now much cooler. Those who
know the city may briefly visit some of its nearer
shrines, such as the Mosque of the Two Qiblas, with
its resonances of the lost Muslim city of Jerusalem,
the Third Holy City. Unlike Madina, Jerusalem has been
tragically desacralised in recent decades, with the
introduction of night clubs, pornography, and every
form of degradation. But Islam's grasp on Madina is
still strong. Such is God's power in defence of His
Messenger that no enemy army has succeeded in
capturing it, since the dawn of Islam.

The adhan sounds for isha, and the veins of the
city pump back towards the mosque which is its heart.
Grateful for God's gift of food and drink, the
pilgrims are eager for the prayer, followed by the
Tarawih rite extending almost two hours into the
night.

Tarawih in Madina is one of the great spectacles
of the world. Perhaps a million men, women and
children, stand in neat lines in the mosque, on its
roof, and in the marbled spaces nearby. Tarawih in
Mecca is an experience of austere majesty; in Madina,
it is characterised by delight and by love. To pray in
the company of God's Messenger, who rose through the
seven heavens to bring to us the gift of prayer, and
who will intercede for tides of humanity, is an almost
inexpressible joy. Villagers from Pakistan,
shopkeepers from Turkey, Nigerian businessmen, and
Bosnian farmers, all stand together, their differences
annihilated by the presence of the man whose mission
was truly universal.

In the Qur'an, there is nothing of Arab pride.
Its original context in history was the Arab people,
but it pays little attention to them. It is
farsighted, affirming that each previous prophet had
been sent only to his own people; but that now, a
Prophet had come who was for all mankind. And here is
the proof of that mission's truth and of its success
under God: a million human beings, outwardly diverse
but of a single heart, basking in the glow of Madina.

After Tarawih, it is tea-time. Midnight, under
the arc-lamps of this warm city, is no time for sleep.
Sufi fraternities meet in homes, and recall the
glories of the Beloved of Madina. Hadith are read, in
the sing-song style traditional in the city.
Commentaries are given in the delightful Madina
dialect, so rich in Syrian and Turkish words.

Tahajjud prayers attract perhaps a quarter of a
million, deep in the small hours. Others are sleeping
in the streets, or in the hotels, which range from
small Egyptian resthouses with doubtful stairs, to the
five-star plushness of the Sheraton and the Green
Palace. On the roofs of many hotels are small gardens,
and here, even at this hour, the Sufi orders are again
enjoying their fellowship in the spirit.

The sunna recommends that at least some of the
night be spent in sleep. Two hours before dawn, most
of the city is silent. And then, the first adhan, more
than an hour before the adhan for the prayer, rises
into the black sky. The hotels serve a pre-dawn meal,
but few linger until the last moment. An hour before
the dawn prayer begins, the mosque is already full,
the worshippers knowing by experience the value of
this time. The Suffa, the small veranda attached to
the Prophetic tomb, is crowded with turbaned men,
prayer-beads in hand. Here lived the poorest of the
Companions, those who were under the most intense
spiritual guidance, who hungered, and lived in rags,
and prayed.

The final adhan sounds, and then the iqama. The
prayer is said, followed by the atmosphere of peace
and consummation which ends each prayer. Many remain
until ishraq, the individual prayer said after
sunrise. Others hail taxis, and visit the outlying
shrines.

The most important of these is Mount Uhud. The
Blessed Prophet proclaimed it as ÁÂ mountain which
loves us, and which we love????Its mysterious quality
has been reinforced by aerial photographs, which show
that the mountain spells the Arabic name of Allah. To
walk in its dry valleys is to encounter solitary
pilgrims, meditating on the evanescence of life.
Occasionally a qalandar is seen, with untidy hair,
fingers heavy with brass rings, his eyes disquietingly
bright. Some live in this hill throughout their visit,
descending to the valley to pray.

Ramadan is a time of renunciation. Although the
morning air is still cool, the sense of detachment
granted by the fast has sobered the crowds, and
focussed their minds. The pilgrims clustered around
the iron grille which allows them to view the graves
of the Martyrs of Uhud read from prayerbooks, or
repeat the words of the muzawwir, the official guide.
"Peace be upon you, Hamza, the Lion of God, the uncle
of God's Messenger!
Peace be upon you, Mus'ab, hero of the
Companions!" Beside the cemetery, the authorities have
constructed a mosque for those who wish to pray in
this place.

The great cemetery of Madina, however, is
al-Baqi'. This lies near the Prophet's tomb, from
which it was until recently separated by one of the
gates of the walled city, the Bab al-Baqi'. The
cemetery has many names, including Jannat al-Baqi',
The Garden of Baqi', and Baqi' Âl-Gharqad, a reference
to the brambles (gharqad) which covered it when Islam
first arrived. In the fifth year of the Hijra, the
Companion Uthman ibn Maz'un died, and was buried
here, and on the Blessed Prophet's instructions the
area was cleared of brambles and became the last
resting place of the Companions.

Today, Baqi' is the most visited graveyard in
the world. Until recently rough cement walls
surrounded it, but in 1996 the authorities replaced
these with fine granite, pierced with large iron and
brass grilles, to commemorate and honour this place.
Some pilgrims stand by the grilles, but others,
particularly in the cool hour after dawn, venture in
by the splendid new gates.

To facilitate circulation, the authorities have
established cement pathways throughout the cemetery.
Guidebooks provide detailed maps of the plots, naming
hundreds of the individuals who are buried here.Hence
the pilgrims, guided by their muzawwirs, stand, or
crouch, before the tombs of the Mothers of the
Believers: A'isha, Hafsa, Umm Habiba and the others.
Nearby is the Blessed Prophet's infant son, the two
year old Ibrahim, whose death caused the Prophet such
pain. The pilgrims move on to salute Uthman, the third
Caliph, and then Imam Malik and his teacher
Nafi'. Al-Abbas, the Prophet's uncle, is here. So too
is Halima al-Sa'diyya, the nurse whose dry breasts
miraculously flowed with milk when the infant Muhammad
was set to them. To one side is the grave of Imam
Shamyl, the nineteenth-century hero of the Caucasus,
visited by Chechen and Daghistani pilgrims to this
day.

Al-Baqi' is a powerful place. Other cities
consider it their pride to host a single saint; but
here there are hundreds. All around lie at rest the
men and women who heard the Prophet's summons, and
broke the idols of their forefathers, and gave their
lives to his cause. To this blessed ambience is added
the baraka of Ramadan, and as the days pass, this too
gains in power.

The fasting city of Madina has other wonders,
although not all are as spectacular as the Haram and
al-Baqi'. There is one mosque no bigger than a
prayer-mat, surrounded by two layers of bricks, which
marks the spot where the Blessed Prophet once prayed.
An elderly man lives nearby, and sweeps the tiny
mosque daily, dispensing prayers and teaching-stories
to the visitors.

The tribes of Aws and Khazraj, who welcomed the
Prophet and his teaching, still live in Madina,
retaining their traditions of courtesy and
hospitality. The basalt homes in which they once
lived: the traditional
Madinese bayt al-bi'r, built around a courtyard
which was often covered with a net and filled with
tropical birds, are now mostly gone. Yet otherwise,
not much has changed in fourteen hundred years.
Pernicious and cheapening influences from the world
outside are successfully excluded.

Madina shows the truth of the hadith that
"Madina expels impurities as a furnace expels
impurities from iron." The form of the city has
changed, but the heart is immutable. In Ramadan, more
than at any other time, the continued strength of
Islam is manifest here. The city is well-defended; as
a hadith recorded by Imam Muslim states, the
Antichrist cannot enter it, but will be driven away on
the lava-plains by al-Khidr himself. In this city,
and in this month, the Muslims are at home.

Ramadan: a Spiritual Time in Senegal for a Foreign Student

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Salaam Alekum. At this time last year I was fasting. For those of you who don't know, this is the month of Ramadan, the holiest month of the Muslim year. It is observed by Muslims worldwide through fasting and increased concentration on purification of the soul and closeness with God.

While not a Muslim myself, this time last year found me in Senegal, the westernmost country in Africa, whose population is 90 percent Muslim. Given that just about everyone I knew was Muslim and would be fasting during Ramadan, I decided, rather reluctantly, to fast as well.

If all my friends had to force themselves through it, I figured the least I could do was try it for myself to better sympathize with what they were going through. When in Rome, do as the Romans; when in Senegal, fast.

While I had resolved to fast for the entire month, I can't say I was particularly excited about it. The prospect of no food or drink from sunrise to sunset for 28 days straight didn't strike me as particularly appealing, especially in a climate much more conducive to thirst than our own.

Senegal is not known for its mild mid day temperatures, which often soar above 90 degrees.

Ramadan started with a bang, a rather large one, that woke me up at 5:30 a.m. as my friend pounded on my door telling me we had to go eat before sunrise or we would never make it to 7 p.m. when we could break our fast.

Reluctantly, I pulled myself out of bed and dragged my half-asleep body to the dining hall where we ate the heavy porridge that was supposed to get us throug h the next 11 hours of non-consumption.

"This is what they have to go through every day," I told myself, proud for being so compassionate and forcing myself to experience the pain and suffering that my friends had to go through every day.

But this is where I got it all wrong. I went into Ramadan thinking that it was a miserable time in which Muslims forced themselves to endure the excruciating discomfort of hunger and thirst out of some cruel religious obligation.

But as the month progressed, I discovered that quite the opposite was true. The early breakfasts I had originally despised became more tolerable. I actually began to look forward to sunset, when we would all gather in friends' rooms to break the fast together while talking and joking about who was hungrier.

As time went on, I discovered that the focus of Ramadan is not, as many outsiders believe, on the pain and self-denial of fasting.

For Muslims worldwide, Ramadan is a time of increased focus on spiritual purity and closeness to God, a time for reconciling differences between people, and a time for visiting with friends and family.

While I had gone into Ramadan thinking that I was "putting myself through it" in order to "better sympathize" with my friends, sympathy was the last thing they needed.

Ramadan was the most treasured time of the year.

When it ended, I was sitting with one of my friends, saying, "I can't believe it's over already." All the fun had just begun.

Reaping the opportunities in Ramadan

The Prophet's (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) companions used to say, "Let not the day that you fast and the day that you do not fast be equal." It is important that one's behaviour, attitude and outlook should not be the same on the day that one is fasting and when one is not fasting. There should be a change, as one is trying to worship Allah more, so one's fasting should have an effect.

Lesson 1: Gaining taqwa (fear of Allah)

Allah legislated fasting for gaining taqwa, "O you who believe fasting has been prescribed upon you as it has been prescribed upon those before you, so that you may attain taqwa." (meaning of Sooratul Baqarah (2):138) Tawqa in this case means, to make a shield between oneself and Allah's anger and hellfire. So we should ask ourselves, when we break our fasts, 'Has this fasting day made us fear Allah more ? Has it resulted that we want to protect ourselves from the hellfire ?'

Lesson 2: Drawing us closer to Allah

This is achieved by reciting and reflecting on Al-Qur'an during the night and the day, attending the taraweh prayers, remembering Allah, sitting in circles of knowledge and for those who can, making umrah. The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said,"An umrah in the month of Ramadan is equal (in reward) to performing a hajj." (Ahmad & Ibn Majah). Also for those who can, making itikaf (seclusion) in the last ten days of Ramadan, so to leave all worldly pursuits and seclude oneself in a masjid just thinking of Allah, this brings us closer to Allah. When one sins, one feels distant from Allah. That is why one might find it hard to read and reflect on the Qur'an and come to the masjid. However, the obedient worshipper feels closer to Allah and wants to worship Allah more, because Allah forgives and is merciful.

Lesson 3: Acquiring patience and strong will

Allah has mentioned patience more than seventy times in the Qur'an and has commanded patience in more than sixteen ways in His Book. So when one fasts, and gives up one's food and drink, and one's marital sexual relations for those hours, one learns restraint and patience. This ummah needs men and women that are strong willed, who can stand upon the Sunnah and the Book of Allah and not waver in front of the enemies of Allah. We do not need emotional people, who raise slogans and shout, but when the time comes to stand upon something firm, they cannot do so, they waver.

Lesson 4: Striving for ihsan (righteousness & sincerity) and staying away from riyaa’ (showing off)

Ihsan means to worship Allah as if one sees Him, for if one does not see Him, He sees all. Hasan al-basri said,"By Allah in the last twenty years, I have not said a word or taken something with my hand or refrained to take something with my hand or stepped forward or stepped back, except that I have thought before I have done any action,'Does Allah love this action ? Is Allah pleased with this action ?' " So when one is fasting, one should gain this quality of watching oneself and also staying away from riyah (showing off). That is why Allah said in a qudsi hadith, "..Fasting is for Me and I will reward it.." (Bukhari) Allah singles out fasting from all other types of worship saying, "..Fasting is for Me..", because no one knows whether you are fasting or not, except Allah. For example, when one is praying or giving charity or making tawwaf, one can be seen by the people, so one might do the action seeking the praise of the people. Sufian at-thawri used to spend the nights and the days crying and the people used to ask him, "Why do you cry, is it due to the fear of Allah ?", he said,'No.', they said,"Is it due to the fear of the hell-fire ?", he said, 'No. It is not the fear of Allah that makes me cry, what makes me cry is that I have been worshipping Allah all these years and doing scholarly teaching, but I am not certain that my intentions are purely for Allah.'

Lesson 5: Refinement of manners, especially those related to truthfulness and discharging trusts.

The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said,"Whoever does not abandon falsehood in word and action, then Allah, the Mighty and the Majestic has no need that he should leave his food and drink." (Bukhari) And the Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said,"It may be that a fasting person attains nothing but hunger and thirst from his fast." (Ibn Majah) What we learn from this, is that we must pay attention to the purification of our manners. The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said,"I was sent to perfect good manners." (Muwatta) So we must check ourselves, are we following the behaviour of the Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him). For example, Do we give salam to those we don't know and those we do know? Do we follow the manners of Islam, by telling the truth and only telling the truth? Are we merciful to the creation?

Lesson 6: Recognising that one can change for the better

The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said,"Every son of Adam sins and the best of the sinners are those who repent." (Ibn Majah) Allah provides many opportunities to repent to Him and seek His forgiveness. If one was disobedient they can become obedient.

Lesson 7: Being more charitable

Ibn Abbas said,"The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) was the most charitable amongst the people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when Gibreel used to meet him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the month. The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) used to recite the Holy Qur'an to Gibreel." (Bukhari) The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "He who gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will receive the same reward as him, without nothing being reduced from the fasting person's reward." (Tirmidhi )

Lesson 8: Sensing the unity of the Muslims

The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "...Those of you who will live after me, will see many differences. Then you must cling on to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided khalifah. Hold fast to it and stick to it.." (Abu Dawud) It is possible for Muslims to be a single body, but this will only be achieved when obedience is only to Allah and His Messenger. One senses unity, because the Muslims pray and fast together.

Lesson 9: Learning discipline

The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "Bilal makes the adhan, while it is still night; therefore, eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum makes the adhan." (Bukhari) The Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) made us adhere to this strictness. Similarly one cannot knowingly break the fast before the sunset, as this will not be accepted by Allah. Muslims should learn to be very strict in their lives, because they are people of an important message, which they mould their lives around.

Lesson 10: Teaching the young to worship Allah

It was the practice of the people of Madinah, that during the fast of Ashura (which is now a recommended fast of one day) to get their children to fast with them. When the children would cry of hunger and thirst, their parents would distract their attention by giving them some sort of toy to play with. The children would break their fast with their parents. (mentioned in Bukhari) So the young should be brought to the masjid and they should pray with their parents, so that they are able to get into the habit of becoming worshippers of Allah. If one does not encourage children to fast when they are young, they will find it very difficult to fast for thirty days at the age of puberty. This is why the Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, "Command your children to pray at the age of seven and beat them at the age of ten (if they do not pray)" (Hakim)

Lesson 11: Caring for one's health

Fasting teaches Muslims to take care of their health and to build strong bodies. The Prophet (may Allah send his blessing and peace upon him) said,"A strong believer is better and is more beloved to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone." (Muslim)

Taraweeh

The Ramadan nightly prayer has a special merit over other nights. The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever observes night prayer in Ramadan as an expression of his faith and to seek reward from Allah, his previous sins will be blotted out." (Muslim)

In this hadith, faith means faith in what Allah has promised the observers of night prayers. To seek reward mean, the observer's intent is not for eye service or seeking special recognition from someone.

Taraweeh is derived from the Arabic root word, raaha, which means to rest, relax and use as recreation. It is so called because the believers used to prolong it. After every four raka'ats they would stop for rest and relaxation and resume until taraweeh was complete.

Taraweeh In Jamaa`ah
The Messenger of Allah (saas) was the first to establish the Sunnah of congregational, jamaa`ah prayer of taraweeh in the Masjid. Then he did not continue with the Sunnah for fear that it might be made mandatory on the Ummah in Ramadan, and they might not be able to do it. In the books of Bukhari and Muslim, 'Aishah (raa) has been reported as saying:

"The Messenger of Allah (saas) observed Taraweeh prayer in the Masjid one night and people prayed with him. He repeated the following night and the number of participants grew. The companions congregated the third and fourth night, but the Messenger did not show up. In the morning he told them, "I saw what you did last night, but nothing prevented me from joining you except my fear that it might be made mandatory on you in Ramadan."

This hadith is a clear indication that the Taraweeh in congregation was not an innovation of 'Umar, the second Khalifah, despite his saying to the contrary. For it has been related that: "Umar bin Al-Khattab attended the Masjid at night in Ramadan and saw people praying individually in every corner of the Masjid with a few in groups. He did not like the sight a bit. 'Umar said, `I thought it would be better to gather these under one Imam'. So, he combined them under 'Obayi bin Ka'ab and Tamimu Ad-Dari to alternate and lead the believers in eleven raka'ats of night prayer. The next day `Umar was in the Masjid which was full with Taraweeh prayers. He was delighted. He said: `Well, this is the best Bid'ah (innovation).'"

`Umar's use of the word bid'ah in this report has been presented and unjustifiably cited as justification for concocting up various so called good innovations. In truth, the Khalifah 'Umar's act to gather the believers in Jama'ah is not bid'ah. For it was the Messenger of Allah himself who started jama'ah by praying in congregation the first and second day, then stopped only as he feared it would become mandatory. After his death, the fear of Taraweeh becoming mandatory (Fard) was not only remote, it was impossible. With the death of the Prophet Muhammad (saas), there will be no more revelation to change any law or rule by abrogation.

Number of Raka'ats in Taraweeh
As for the number of raka'ats in Taraweeh and Witr, the worthy ancestor, Salaf as-Saalih disagreed on the amount of Raka'ats. These numbers are mentioned for raka'ats: 39, 29, 23, 19, 13, and 11 raka'ats. Of all the numbers mentioned, none is sounder than 11 raka'ats. 'Aishah (raa) was asked how was the prayer of the Prophet (saas)? She replied: "He did not pray in Ramadan or some other times more than eleven raka'ats." (Muslim/Bukhari)

However, there is nothing wrong with praying more than 11 raka'ats. Perhaps that is why different numbers are observed. The Prophet himself was asked about night prayer and he said: "It may be done in two raka'ats, and if anyone fears the appearance of morning, he should pray one rak'ah as a Witr for what he has already prayed." (Bukhari/Muslim)

As this hadith indicates, if a person is to pray individually at night, by daybreak he would have prayed one hundred and one raka'ats, or more.

In their desire to pray more raka'ats, some people make Taraweeh in extreme speed. That is wrong, especially when the speed leads to a breach of certain rules of prayer. In that case, the prayer will not be valid. Similarly, it is undesirable for an Imam to pray with such speed whereby the followers will have difficulty observing the necessary deeds in Salaat.

Neglecting Taraweeh
No one should neglect Taraweeh without a good reason, for it is part of physical and spiritual training, for its observation soon after Iftar insures timely and proper digestion of food. Besides, there are spiritual rewards awaiting the observers of this prayer. No one would like to leave the Masjid before the prayer is over.

Everybody should attend the Masjid prayers, including women, provided they are properly covered. The Messenger of Allah said: "Prevent not the women servants of Allah, from going to the Masjid of Allah." However, when they attend the Masjid they should wear no perfume, nor raise their voices, and or show their beauty. Allah (SWT) states: "...they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof..." (Al-Qur'an, 24:31)

What ordinarily appears, refers to the outer garments, for when the Messenger (saas) commanded women to attend Eid prayer, Umm 'Atiyah (raa) said: "O Messenger of Allah, some of us do not have the outer garment (jilbab). The Messenger of Allah told her to let a sister (who has more than one) give her one to wear." (Agreed upon)

It is Sunnah that they pray behind the men in the rear lines. The Messenger has been reported as saying: "The best lines for men are the front lines and the worst lines for men are the rear lines. The best lines for women is the rear and the worst lines of women are the front line. (Muslim)

The women should leave the Masjid as soon as the Imam says: As-Salaamu 'Alaikum. They should not delay without a valid reason. In a hadith by Umm Salmah, she said: "When the Messenger of Allah (saas) saluted to end prayer, the women would stand up to leave and the Messenger would remain in his place for a while." Umm Salmah (raa) said: Allah is the best knower, but perhaps the Messenger did that so women would leave before men could overtake them". (Bukhari)

And amidst the enveloping atmosphere of love, warmth and generosity surrounding the Iftar tables illuminated by colorful Ramadan lamps, there will still remain an element of uniqueness depending on the specific habits and details that differ from countries to houses. Maybe you have something special planned for Ramadan this year as well?

As a season defined by habits and traditions, we encourage you to participate in those that will ensure you get good nutrition and stay healthy all through this blessed month. You can try to avoid practices that might bring on fatigue, thirst and lethargy during the fast.
So to help you follow all the right habits, we’ve prepared a list of simple tips to keep you and your family healthy and happy all through the Holy Month of Ramadan:

1. Drink 8 glasses of water daily from Iftar to Suhour to prevent dehydration and constipation
2. Sleep for 6-8 hours a day to get sufficient mental and physical rest. Less sleep means you will feel tired during the day which in turns leads to less productivity and activity
3. Have a balanced varied Iftar which incorporates dates, soup, salad, a main dish, fruits and a small piece of Ramadan sweet
4. Walk or participate in some kind of physical activity
5. Have Suhour to fill your body with energy and help regulate your blood sugar

And unhealthy habits to avoid:

1. Try not to drink excess fluids at night for fear of thirst during the day. This will lead to abdominal distress
2. Don’t eat a wide variety of food at night or Suhour especially foods high in fat, thinking that they will prevent hunger pangs during the day
3. Avoid eating large amounts of food at Iftar which will lead to extreme fullness
4. Try and avoid having a large quantity of starters and sweets which will lead to weight gain.

Tip: Hydrate your body during Ramadan!

Fluids are very important for the health and vitality of your body during the fasting period and it is important to drink plenty of water, in addition to other refreshing drinks.

Easy nutrition tips to staying energetic during this summer Ramadan

This year, the holy month of Ramadan falls closer to the summer, which means that fasting hours become longer. So, during this time what does your body depend on to be able to last the whole day and keep going?

When you fast, your energy mainly depends on the sugar glucose that you consume during your Suhour meal. But this meal can only provide energy for a few hours and then your body has to depend on its stored glucose (glycogen) and fats. And after fasting the whole day, it is the food you eat at Iftar that will provide your body cells with calories and nutrients to give you energy and vitality.
Suhour meal for vitality – what to eat for more energy and endurance?

For longer lasting energy this year, it is important to pay attention to the quality of the food you eat at this predawn meal. It is considered essential, as it prevents hunger, tissue breakdown and offers better endurance ability during the long day.

Try to eat slowly digestible and absorbable foods which are rich in fibre such as complex carbohydrates (whole-wheat breads, rice, pasta, potatoes and whole wheat grains such as Burghul). These foods give you energy that can last for many hours unlike foods high in sugar which provide energy for only a short time and then lead to a drop in the blood sugar levels, leading to low energy. In addition, whole-wheat breads and cereals are rich in B vitamins which help release energy from the food you’ve eaten.

You can also eat protein-rich foods together with your complex carbohydrates, such as milk and dairy products (yogurt, Labneh, and cheese, preferably white cheese which has a lower fat content) or legumes (fava beans or chickpeas) that will make you feel full for a longer period.
Iftar to replenish your energy stores – what to eat to compensate for liquids and nutrients?

* Break your fast with a few dates, a glass of fresh juice and a bowl of soup. Dates, juices and soups are good sources of carbohydrates and help bring your low blood glucose to normal levels. Liquids (water, juice, soup) also help maintain the fluid and electrolyte balance in the body and replenish whatever was lost during the day.
* For more energy and vitality make sure this meal is balanced by including complex carbohydrate sources, protein from meat or legumes, vegetables as well as fruits.

Few tips to prevent the feeling of thirst during your Ramadan days:

1. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and water between Iftar and Suhour to prevent dehydration
2. Limit your intake of fried foods and foods high in fats and sugar
3. Avoid foods high in salt such as pickles, salty crackers and nuts, and canned foods
4. Try not to drink too much tea especially at Suhour as it can increase fluids lost through urination
5. Don’t overeat at the Suhour meal

Good to know

Light exercise between 3 pm and Maghreb time can help you burn body fat which allows you to lose or maintain your weight.

The Meaning of Ramadan

Fasting during Ramadan, the Muslims holy month, was ordained during the second year of Hijrah. Why not earlier? In Makkah the economic conditions of the Muslims were bad. They were being persecuted. Often days would go by before they had anything to eat. It is easy to skip meals if you don’t have any. Obviously fasting would have been easier under the circumstances. So why not then?

The answer may be that Ramadan is not only about skipping meals. While fasting is an integral and paramount part of it, Ramadan offers a comprehensive program for our spiritual overhaul. The entire program required the peace and security that was offered by Madinah.

Yes, Ramadan is the most important month of the year. It is the month that the believers await with eagerness. At the beginning of Rajab --- two full months before Ramadan --- the Prophet Muhammad, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, used to supplicate thus: "O Allah! Bless us during Rajab and Sha’ban, and let us reach Ramadan (in good health)."

During Ramadan the believers get busy seeking Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, and protection from Hellfire. This is the month for renewing our commitment and re-establishing our relationship with our Creator. It is the spring season for goodness and virtues when righteousness blossoms throughout the Muslim communities. "If we combine all the blessings of the other eleven months, they would not add up to the blessings of Ramadan," said the great scholar and reformer Shaikh Ahmed Farooqi (Mujaddad Alif Thani). It offers every Muslim an opportunity to strengthen his Iman, purify his heart and soul, and to remove the evil effects of the sins committed by him.

"Anyone who fasts during this month with purity of belief and with expectation of a good reward (from his Creator), will have his previous sins forgiven," said Prophet Muhammad, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam. "Anyone who stands in prayers during its nights with purity of belief and expectation of a reward, will have his previous sins forgiven." As other ahadith tell us, the rewards for good deeds are multiplied manifold during Ramadan.

Along with the possibility of a great reward, there is the risk of a terrible loss. If we let any other month pass by carelessly, we just lost a month. If we do the same during Ramadan, we have lost everything. The person who misses just one day’s fast without a legitimate reason, cannot really make up for it even if he were to fast everyday for the rest of his life. And of the three persons that Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam cursed, one is the unfortunate Muslim who finds Ramadan in good health but does not use the opportunity to seek Allah’s mercy.

One who does not fast is obviously in this category, but so also is the person who fasts and prays but makes no effort to stay away from sins or attain purity of the heart through the numerous opportunities offered by Ramadan. The Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, warned us: "There are those who get nothing from their fast but hunger and thirst. There are those who get nothing from their nightly prayers but loss of sleep."

Those who understood this, for them Ramadan was indeed a very special month. In addition to fasting, mandatory Salat, and extra Travih Salat, they spent the whole month in acts of worship like voluntary Salat, Tilawa (recitation of Qur’an), Dhikr etc. After mentioning that this has been the tradition of the pious people of this Ummah throughout the centuries, Abul Hasan Ali Nadvi notes: " I have seen with my own eyes such ulema and mashaikh who used to finish recitation of the entire Qur’an everyday during Ramadan. They spent almost the entire night in prayers. They used to eat so little that one wondered how they could endure all this. These greats valued every moment of Ramadan and would not waste any of it in any other pursuit…Watching them made one believe the astounding stories of Ibada and devotion of our elders recorded by history."

This emphasis on these acts of worship may sound strange --- even misplaced --- to some. It requires some explanation. We know that the term Ibada (worship and obedience) in Islam applies not only to the formal acts of worship and devotion like Salat , Tilawa, and Dhikr, but it also applies to worldly acts when performed in obedience to Shariah and with the intention of pleasing Allah. Thus a believer going to work is performing Ibada when he seeks Halal income to discharge his responsibility as a bread-winner for the family. However a distinction must be made between the two. The first category consists of direct Ibada, acts that are required for their own sake. The second category consists of indirect Ibada --- worldly acts that become Ibada through proper intention and observation of Shariah. While the second category is important for it extends the idea of Ibada to our entire life, there is also a danger because by their very nature these acts can camouflage other motives. (Is my going to work really Ibada or am I actually in the rat race?). Here the direct Ibada comes to the rescue. Through them we can purify our motives, and re-establish our relationship with Allah.

Islam does not approve of monasticism. It does not ask us to permanently isolate ourselves from this world, since our test is in living here according to the Commands of our Creator. But it does ask us to take periodic breaks from it. The mandatory Salat (five daily prayers) is one example. For a few minutes every so many hours throughout the day, we leave the affairs of this world and appear before Allah to remind ourselves that none but He is worthy of worship and of our unfaltering obedience. Ramadan takes this to the next higher plane, providing intense training for a whole month.

This spirit is captured in I’tikaf, a unique Ibada associated with Ramadan, in which a person gives up all his normal activities and enters a mosque for a specific period. There is great merit in it and every Muslim community is encouraged to provide at least one person who will perform I’tikaf for the last ten days of Ramadan. But even those who cannot spare ten days are encouraged to spend as much time in the mosque as possible.

Through direct Ibada we "charge our batteries"; the indirect ones allow us to use the power so accumulated in driving the vehicle of our life. Ramadan is the month for rebuilding our spiritual strength. How much we benefit from it is up to us.

Welcoming the Arrival of Ramadan

The month of Ramadan has arrived again, the month of fasting and prayer. It is the month that provides an opportunity for forgiveness from Allah and emancipation from our sins. It is the month for performing good deeds and giving in charity. It is the month when the gates of the heavens are opened and the rewards for our deeds are magnified many times over. It is the month wherein prayers are answered and the status of the worshipper is elevated. It is the month wherein sins are forgiven.

Allah bestows so many blessings upon his servants in the month of Ramadan. This is the month of fasting that is one of the five pillars of Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) fasted during this month and directed his followers to do the same. He told us that whoever fasts this month with faith, seeking Allah’s reward, will have all of his past sins forgiven. He likewise informed us that whoever stands in prayer throughout this month will have all of his past sins forgiven.

The month of Ramadan contains within it a night that is superior to a thousand months. Whoever is denied the goodness of that night is indeed deprived.

We should welcome this month and embrace it with happiness and joy. We should have the truest resolve to observe the fasts and the prayers and to compete in doing righteous deeds. During this month, we should ardently repent for all of our sins and encourage each other to engage in virtuous deeds and call to what is right and forbid what is wrong. In this way, we will succeed in attaining the blessings and the great rewards of Ramadan.

The fast provides us with many benefits and is full of wisdom. It purifies and strengthens our hearts. It rids us of our baser tendencies like exuberance, arrogance, and stinginess. It reinforces our good traits like fortitude, clemency, and generosity. It supports us in our inner struggle to please Allah and attain nearness to Him.

Fasting teaches us about ourselves and our needs. It shows us how weak we are and how truly dependent we are upon our Lord. It shows us how much Allah has blessed us. We are reminded of our brethren those who are less fortunate and are inspired to treat them well. We are compelled to thank Allah and to use the blessings He has provided us in obedience to Him.

Allah draws attention to these many benefits when he says: “O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it has been prescribed for those who were before you that you may learn self-restraint.” [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 183]

In this verse, Allah makes it clear that he prescribed fasting in order to purify us. Fasting is a means for us to learn self-restraint and cultivate our piety. Piety is to observe the commandments and prohibitions of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) sincerely out of our love and reverence for Allah, and to avoid His punishment and anger.

Fasting is a great act of piety in itself and a great means of increasing our piety in all aspects of our religious and worldly lives.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) pointed out one of the benefits of fasting when he said: “O young people, whoever among you has the wherewithal to marry should do so, because it assists us in lowering our gazes and safeguarding our private parts. Whoever cannot do so should fast, because fasting diminishes sexual power.”

The reason that fasting has this effect is because Satan flows like blood through our veins. Fasting constrains this flow while and acts as a reminder of Allah and His greatness, thereby reducing Satan’s influence over the fasting person while at the same time his faith strengthening. He naturally starts engaging in more acts of obedience and fewer acts of sin.

There are many other benefits of fasting that we can discover with a little thought and reflection. Fasting is good for bodily health. It gives the body a chance to purify itself of accumulated poisons, a fact which has been confirmed by numerous doctors.

The sacred texts speak quite extensively about the virtues of fasting in the month of Ramadan and about it being a duty upon the believers. Allah says: “O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it has been prescribed for those who were before you that you may learn self-restraint. Fasting for a fixed number of days… The month of Ramadan in which the Qur’ân was revealed, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and the criterion. So whoever witnesses the month should fast it. And whoever is sick or upon a journey should fast the same number of days (later on). Allah wishes ease for you and he does not wish hardship upon you. He wants that you should complete the period and that you should exalt Allah for that to which he has guided you that perhaps you may be thankful.” [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 183-185]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Islam is built upon five things: testifying that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, paying Zakâh, fasting the month of Ramadan, and the pilgrimage to the House. [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]

When the angel Gabriel asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about Islam, he replied: “Islam is to bear witness that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to pay charity, to fast the month of Ramadan, and to perform pilgrimage to the House if you are able to make the journey.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî]

Gabriel then said: “You have spoken the truth.” Then he said: “Tell me about faith.”

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) replied: “It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree, both the good and bad of it.”

He said: “You have spoken the truth. Tell me about excellence in faith.”

Allah’s Messenger replied: “It is to worship Allah as though you see Him, and though you do not see Him, you know that He sees you.”

He said: “You have spoken the truth. [Sahîh Muslim]

This hadîth is of considerable importance and deserves serious thought and consideration.

Once Mu`âdh b. Jabal said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): “Tell me about some deed that will admit me into Paradise and distance me from the Hellfire.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “You have asked about something great, yet it is very simple for one for whom Allah makes it easy. Worship Allah and do not associate anything with him in worship. Establish prater, pay Zakâh, fast the month of Ramadan, and undertake the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him added: “Should I not inform you about the gates of goodness? Fasting is Paradise. Charity extinguishes sins like water extinguishes fire.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî]

Fasting is a most virtuous act with a reward commensurate with its greatness. This is especially true in Ramadan, since Allah has made fasting therein an obligation upon the believers and a means of their attaining salvation.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Every deed of the human being is for himself and its reward is multiplied for him from ten to seven hundred times. Allah says: ‘Except for fasting, for truly it is for Me and I alone will reward it, for verily he abandoned his desires, his food, and his drink for my sake.’ The one who fasts experiences two joys, one upon breaking his fast and one when he meets his Lord. Surely the breath of the fasting person is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When Ramadan commences, the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are bound in chains.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]

The Prophet (peace be upon him said: “On the first night of Ramadan, the devils and rebellious jinn are bound in chains, The gates of Paradise are opened until not a single gate remains closed. The gates of Hell are bound shut until not a single gate remains open. Then a caller calls out: ‘O desirer of good, go forth! O desirer of evil, restrain yourself! Allah is emancipating people from the Fire every night’.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî]

On the eve of Ramadan, the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave a sermon and said: “O people! A great and blessed month is coming upon you, a month containing a night better than a thousand months. Allah has made fasting in its days an obligation and observing prayer in its nights a voluntary act. Anyone who seeks nearness to Allah in theis month through any virtuous act will be like one who carried out a religious obligation at another time, and anyone who performs an obligatory act of worship in this month will be like one who performed seventy such acts at another time. It is the month of patience, and the reward for patience is Paradise.” [Sahîh Ibn Khuzaymah]

We must seize the opportunity presented to us in this blessed month and appreciate the greatness of this time by engaging in all the worship that we can. We must hasten to perform good deeds. Allah has made this month a time for worship and for competing with one another in righteousness. We must increase our prayer and our spending in charity. We must busy ourselves with reading the Qur’ân. We must hasten to help the poor, the needy, and the orphans. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most generous of all people and he was even more generous in Ramadan. We must follow the good example of our Prophet (peace be upon him) by redoubling our efforts in this month.

We need to safeguard the blessings of our fasts from our sins and our shortcomings. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever does not leave off false speech and false conduct, Allah has no need of his leaving off food and drink.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When any one of you is observing the fast for the day, he should neither indulge in obscene language nor raise his voice. If someone insults him or quarrels with him, he should say: ‘I am fasting’.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]

We must beseech Allah for forgiveness in this month and do all that we can to take advantage of this precious time. We must avoid committing any offence against the fast that will diminish its blessings and invoke Allah’s anger. Therefore, we must not be negligent of our prayers or stingy with our Zakâh. We must not consume interest or the property of the orphans. We must not steal, oppress anyone, or disrespect our parents. We must not spurn our kinfolk. We must avoid backbiting, slander, lies, and falsehood. We must eschew false oaths and claims. We must not shave or trim our beards or leave our moustaches to grow. We must not listen to song and musical instruments. Women must not make a wanton display of themselves and men should not mix with them. These sins are forbidden throughout the year, but in Ramadan they are even more forbidden and more sinful.

We must fear Allah and avoid what Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) have prohibited us. We must be upright in our obedience in Ramadan and throughout the rest of the year. We should call one another to this and by doing so attain the success and salvation that this month promises us.

TDW University - Rahasia Menjadi Kaya dan Bertumbuh Semakin Kaya

TDW University - Rahasia Menjadi Kaya dan Bertumbuh Semakin Kaya
Kenapa orang kaya semakin kaya, kelas menengah bergumul terus,
dan yang miskin bablas miskin.

Kenapa orang kaya semakin kaya, karena begitu orang kaya penghasilannya
bertambah besar maka gaya hidupnya sementara tetap (menunda kesenangan).
Sedemikian
sehingga penghasilan mereka bertambah besar.

Kenapa orang miskin bablas miskin ?

Pertanyaannya :
Bila penghasilan Anda bertambah besar, Anda belikan apa?

Jika lebih, disebut flush out .

Generasi II : 25 X Rp. 2000,- X 12 = Rp. 600.000,- / hari / HU
Generasi III : 125 X Rp. 2000,- X 12 = Rp. 3.000.000,- / hari / HU Dari perhitungan diatas terlihat potensi Bonus Generasi Duplikasi Anda adalah Rp. 3.720.000,-/hari.

5. Royalti Keagenan
A. Royalti Keagenan Pulsa Reguler

Penilaian prestasi menggunakan sistem flush out. 1 poin terhitung jika terdapat 13 pasang dalam 1 hari. Jenis-Jenis Reward
1 poin : Polis Asuransi kecelakaan Gratis dengan pertanggungan senilai Rp.10.000.000,-
15 poin : Televisi senilai Rp.1.000.000,- + Pin & Sertifikat
30 poin : Handphone senilai Rp.2.000.000,- + Pin & Sertifikat
75 poin : Laptop senilai Rp.5.000.000,- + Pin & Sertifikat
100 poin : Infokus (LCD Projector) senilai Rp.6.500.000,- + Pin & Sertifikat
150 poin : Motor Rp. 15.000.000,- + Pin & Sertifikat
425 poin : Program Religi ke tanah suci Rp. 30.000.000,- + Pin & Sertifikat
